DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of our roadways, especially during the challenging winter months when snow plowing becomes essential. Your contributions extend beyond snow removal to encompass work on various construction sites, where your skills directly impact the infrastructure and safety of the traveling public.

Each day presents opportunities to tackle manual labor challenges, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and dedication.

In addition to operating heavy machinery, you are entrusted with performing minor repairs and conducting preventative maintenance on your equipment and trucks. Your role also involves meticulous record-keeping, as you complete daily logs and reports to track equipment usage and maintenance history. This documentation is vital for operational efficiency and fosters accountability within the team. You return home knowing that your hard work plays a vital part in enhancing road safety and improving the quality of life for countless residents.

WORK SCHEDULE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours subject to change and overtime may be required based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework:
    You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:
    In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements
  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
Additional Requirement
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
