We are seeking a passionate and ambitious Applied Meteorologist Intern to join our Data Science team. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on real-world projects that leverage advanced analytics, machine learning, and meteorological expertise to improve forecasts and deliver actionable insights to millions of users worldwide.
This internship is for spring/summer 2026 and can either be remote or based out of Accu Weather's Headquarters in State College, PA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Execute QA/QC processes on meteorological datasets, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and readiness for modeling and research applications.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for data workflows, verification methodologies, and quality control procedures.
- Collaborate with meteorologists, data scientists, and data engineers to integrate data into predictive models and enhance forecast performance.
- Perform lightning verification analysis to evaluate accuracy and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare clear data visualizations and summary reports to effectively communicate findings to internal stakeholders.
- Provide analytical support in diagnosing data inconsistencies and contribute to corrective initiatives to uphold data integrity and quality.
- Research and explore the latest developments in atmospheric science to share broadly with team members.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to project planning discussions to align tasks with broader organizational goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Currently pursuing a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, environmental science, or a closely related field.
- Strong understanding of fundamental meteorological concepts, including atmospheric dynamics and observational data interpretation.
- Strong proficiency using data analysis tools (i.e. Python, SQL, or similar) for handling and visualizing meteorological datasets.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Familiarity with verification and QA/QC processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Detail-orientated with a focus on data accuracy and integrity.
