We invite prospective applicants to apply for the position of Substitute Teacher at the Southern Lehigh School District.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree and active and valid PA Teaching Certificate. *

* If you do not hold a PA Teaching Certificate but have a conferred bachelor’s degree, you can obtain an Emergency Permit that permits individuals to perform day-to-day substitute services. Emergency permits are valid for one (1) school year. The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit #21 conducts training for interested individuals through the Guest Teacher Program. Selected candidates must be able to produce valid PA State Criminal Record Check (ACT 34), FBI Criminal History Record Investigation (ACT 114), PA DHS Child Abuse History Clearance (ACT 151), and PA Arrest/Conviction Report Certification Form (ACT 24) all within one year of issue at the time of hire.

Essential Functions and Duties
  • Ability to speak, read, write, comprehend and communicate in English in oral and written form using proper grammar and composition.
  • Ability to type or input information using a laptop or desktop computer and use the tool for communication, research, presentation and documentation.
  • Ability to operate and use display or presentation equipment including but not limited to whiteboards, projection devices, document cameras, TVs, screens, etc., and use associated equipment (electrical cords, writing aids such as markers, pens, etc).
  • Ability to operate and use various educational and business related equipment (copiers, telephones, fax machines, etc.).
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, use hands to type and write, and lift and carry objects normally weighing under 10 pounds for short distances in order to perform teaching duties in a classroom and school.
  • Ability to enter and exit, move and travel to assigned work areas and about the workplace facility and grounds safely and without employer supports daily, and lead others as necessary in emergency evacuation and drills.
  • Ability to attend work regularly at assigned work hours subject to lawful leave rights and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates cognitive abilities needed for teaching and learning such as attention, language, motor skills, memory, auditory/visual/spatial processing, and ability to invoke executive function skills such as anticipation, working memory, problem solving, decision making, judgment, sequencing, emotional regulation, logic and reasoning, and critical thinking.
Other Duties
  • Maintains the confidentiality of student and school personnel information in accordance with District policy and law.
  • Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students.
  • Maintains a positive learning environment and ensures classroom procedures that fosters a safe and respectful climate for all students and staff.
  • Ensures that learning is appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Ensures the adequate supervision to assure the health, welfare, and safety of all students.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and secure District facilities.
  • Reports to the main office upon arrival at school and secures substitute identification, credentials and keys; checks mailbox of absent teacher in an effort to know of any issues of immediate import or attention; requests clarification of school rules and procedures from the front office personnel, if necessary.
  • Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
  • Consults with persons in appropriate position including peer teachers to seek information or clarification regarding attendance procedures, lesson objectives, daily schedule, materials and equipment location, usage and daily duties.
