Responsibilities
  • Designs and implements the athletic program for the assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Provides supervision of coaching personnel and students during all aspects of the program.
  • Uses sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities.
  • Serves as a positive role model to student athletes and acts as liaison for the school and program with other schools, the community, and organizations.
  • Oversees all aspects of the respective athletic program(s) for the assigned sport(s).
  • Promotes the athletic program through a variety of activities to increase interest and participation.
Essential Functions
  • Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on performance and determine team placement.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, conferences to receive and convey information related to the role.
  • Conducts activities such as parent orientations and recognition events to inform the program and recognize participants’ accomplishments.
  • Develops team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.
  • Develops game strategies/plans to prepare the team and athletes for competition.
  • Guides coaching personnel in instructional techniques and practice organization.
  • Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for equipment and supplies.
  • Implements practice schedules and manages facility and equipment usage for efficient operation.
  • Instructs student athletes to promote athletic growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains records (statistics, permissions, emergency information, schedules, inventories) to comply with district, conference, state requirements and for reporting as needed.
  • Monitors academic eligibility and provides interventions (counseling, tutoring) as needed to maintain eligibility.
  • Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc., for direction and supervision.
  • Promotes the program through off-season clinics, camps, community meetings, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, staff, media, and college representatives with information and guidance.
  • Keeps the school athletic director informed of issues impacting the program.
  • Provides appropriate supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
  • Explains and enforces the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes in the program.
  • Maintains high standards of personal conduct and serves as a role model for athletes.
  • Ensures coaches involved with the program are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • SKILLS are required to adapt to changing work priorities; administering first aid; applying laws, codes, policies, and regulations; coordinating activities with other schools, districts, and/or agencies; organizing and communicating information; overseeing financial transactions.
  • KNOWLEDGE is required in community support organizations and public relations; equipment used in activity/program; injury prevention and treatment protocols; applicable laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; participant eligibility, attendance and discipline guidelines; public relations protocols; professional standards and practices; safety practices and procedures.
  • ABILITY to communicate with persons of varied educational and cultural backgrounds; handle frequent interruptions; exhibit strong leadership; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; motivate student athletes; enforce discipline; provide leadership and team building; travel to off-campus events and competitions; work extended hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
