Position: Grounds Maintenance Worker I

Overview

Under general supervision from a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work associated with maintaining the public use and government areas in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and is subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Distinguishing Features

The Grounds Maintenance Worker I is distinguished from the Grounds Maintenance Worker job class by a non-driving position that does not require a high school diploma or GED.

Essential Functions

Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

  • Performs a variety of landscape maintenance work, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, preparing flower beds for planting and planting flowers, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, debris, and dead plants, and ensuring watering schedule is maintained.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation systems and drip lines for campus grounds and athletic fields. Inspects, repairs, and replaces items associated with the irrigation system on a regular basis to ensure ample water is supplied to all grass and plants.
  • Ensures assigned grounds are kept free from trash and debris and trash cans outside of the buildings are emptied on a regular basis. Cleans and removes weeds and debris from all hardscape areas including sidewalks, gathering areas, parking lots, etc.
  • Performs regular inspections on tables, benches, fencing, etc. Cleans, repairs, or enters work orders for damaged items as required.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of general grounds maintenance principals, practices, and techniques, including equipment use and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the Community’s approved plant palette.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance, including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and controls (pumps, piping, heads, computer controls, timers, etc.).
  • Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including backhoes, sprayers, and mowers.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Ability to move objects weighing at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
