Overview

Definition: Assists the division by assuming routine record keeping activities, providing minor first aid care and conducting site-level health screening. Works under the immediate guidance and direction of the Division Lead Nurse.

Primary Job Functions

Primary functions may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification.

Tasks:

  • Administer first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students
  • Serve as a site-level health advocate for students
  • May administer medication to students according to Board policy and Division procedures; maintain accurate log of medications dispensed
  • Escort students to and from the health office and assist students with disabilities as necessary
  • Performs screening procedures as required
  • Create and submit referrals as necessary
  • Collaborate with School Leaders and departments to ensure students’ health needs are met
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other required documents; including (but not limited to) accurate, updated student health records
  • Prepare correspondence, reports and records
  • Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including (but not limited to) reportable accidents, communicable disease data and referrals for health services
  • Contact parent/guardian in case of student illness/injury and complete accident reports
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student’s health
  • Document student visits to the health office in required platform/method
  • Maintain clinic/health office supply inventory and request/order supplies as needed
  • Prepare and arrange health related bulletin boards, displays, models, etc.
  • Communicate regularly with Site Leader and/or Supervisor regarding health services issues
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State, County and Salt River Community health agencies, and board policy with particular focus to the health and wellness area
  • Review, evaluate, and maintain immunization records
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Maintain health office in a clean and sanitary condition
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical and reasonable
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

Knowledge of:

  • The History, culture, traditions, and customs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
  • Principles and methods of health and/or education programs
  • Signs and symptoms of basic childhood illnesses
  • Student Information Systems Data entry experience preferred
  • Special needs of children in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community

Skilled in:

  • Use of computers and various software programs, such as, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and programs needed to fulfill job requirements
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with children, parents, community agencies, SRPMIC staff, volunteers, educational professionals and school administrators
  • Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive health records and communications
  • Operating a variety of standard office equipment including, photocopy machine, and facsimile machine

Ability to:

  • Make decisions in accordance with rules, regulations, and ordinances
  • Accept limitation of responsibility; ability to follow protocol when administering care
  • Efficiently communicate with stakeholders in various modalities and settings
  • Pay attention to detail, be highly organized and flexible to change
  • Follow oral and written instructions, policies and procedures, rules, regulations and guidelines
  • Demonstrate competence utilizing technology in preparing timely program reports, records, files, etc.
  • Learn job-related material primarily through instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting
  • Lift and carry objects weighing between 20-30 pounds
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material
  • Work cooperatively with other employees and the public
  • Respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations
