The Civilian Investigator investigates and manages an investigative case load and assists Detectives and Police Officers in various Investigative Services Division’s (ISD) units to bring cases to closure. Some positions may be assigned to other units or special assignments. This classification performs a variety of tasks in support of specific, limited law enforcement activities in an investigative bureau of the Police Department.

Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $35.58/hour or $74,006.40/annually.
Education and Experience- Associate’s Degree from an accredited educational institution.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Three years of investigative experience in law enforcement.
- An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
- Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
- Obtain and maintain a Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) certification. Training is provided on duty and certification testing is completed within first six months of hire.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.
Responsibilities- Creates original and supplemental Incident Reports.
- Conducts follow-up phone calls, emails, and in-person contacts with members of the public, law enforcement, and various investigative partners.
- Collects data or information from various sources.
- Contacts other law enforcement agencies, investigative leads, and additional information, utilizing automated systems to research criminal history and conducts background checks.
- Conducts non-suspect interviews and may monitor suspect interviews at the request of a detective or supervisor.
- Contact a suspect by phone when authorized by a supervisor or when accompanied by a sworn officer.
- Creates and reviews Court Orders and Search Warrants and completes required paperwork.
- Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, body fluids, hazardous chemical, firearms, evidence, and unpleasant odors.
- Move objects weighing 50 pounds or less short and long distances.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Visually distinguish full range of color spectrum.
- Read maps.
- Visual and muscular dexterity to operate a motor vehicle, computer equipment, and two-way radio maintaining constant vigilance to the surrounding area.
- Utilize two-way radio to hear and respond to radio communications, voice instructions and/or commands under a variety of working situations.
- Use appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when needed/required.
- Travel to/from various locations.
- Work overtime as required.
- Work a variety of scheduled shifts.
