- Reports to the Underwriting Manager and is responsible for the timely and accurate evaluation and approval/denial of loan applications in accordance with aggregator, investor, and program guidelines.
- Underwrites large or more difficult/complex loans ensuring compliance with Homeowners and secondary market investor standards.
- May provide training and direction to junior underwriters and production staff.
- Has authority to withdraw and decline loans and to develop and recommend modifications to underwriting and production procedures.
- Accepting applications from candidates located in AZ, CA, KS, PA, OR, MN, FL, NM, TX, ME, CO, GA, SC, NY, NC, AL, AK, MO, and NV.
- Hybrid role for Phoenix-Metro area with 2 in-office days at the Scottsdale Corporate branch.
- Advise junior team members; suggest program alternatives for clients who do not initially qualify.
- Analyze required documentation to mitigate risk and make informed decisions.
- Meet or exceed productivity levels and credit quality standards.
- Respond promptly to post-close suspense, quality control issues, and audit reviews.
- Assist Underwriting Manager and support team member training as needed.
- Coordinate with operations and sales colleagues regarding product requirements and loan status.
- Coach processors, LMPs, underwriters, and junior underwriters; collaborate to resolve issues.
- Communicate with LMPs, processors, branch managers, funders, and post-closers about loan decisions and investor guidelines.
- Assess loan risk and determine approval or decline based on data quality.
- Verify employment, credit strength, property characteristics, and other data relevant to credit decisions.
- Ensure investment-quality loan products and borrower creditworthiness; assess collateral acceptability.
- Identify potential quality loans to hold in portfolio if secondary market guidelines cannot be met; escalate as needed.
- Apply internal underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and federal regulations to ensure loan quality.
- Participate in internal meetings and required trainings; maintain professional image and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 7 years of underwriting experience.
- FHA Direct Endorsement Underwriter Designation and/or VA SAR.
- Appraisal and appraisal review experience required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial data; excellent documentation and analytical skills.
- Proficient PC skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Knowledge of investor and GS guidelines including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; experience with DU, LPA, Encompass and other systems preferred.
- Working knowledge of mortgage origination processes and regulatory guidelines (FNMA, FHA, VA, RD, SAFE Act).
- Strong communication skills and customer service oriented; ability to develop positive relationships.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Independent, self-starting, team player attitude.
The work environment is typical of an office setting. May require handling objects up to 10 pounds frequently and 20 pounds occasionally. Regularly seated; occasional standing and walking. Moderate noise level; climate-controlled office.
