Purpose And Scope
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Human Resources, the School Nurse is instrumental in creating a climate of health and well‑being in the school by serving as a direct link among physicians, families, and community health care services and agencies; providing relevant health instruction, counseling and guidance to parents, students and staff; and upholding professional standards and diocesan policies.
The nurse assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The nurse contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community. By bearing witness to Christ, His Church the teachings of our Catholic faith, the nurse cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students.
The nurse obtains necessary certificates, participates in continual professional development, and maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school.
- Plans and implements school health programs in cooperation with administration.
Completes hearing screenings for freshmen. - Provides health care services to students.
- Maintains accurate health records for all students.
- Dispenses medication according to diocesan policy.
- Keeps an accurate daily log of all student contacts.
- Assists with attendance issues as directed by the principal.
- Participates in medical examinations as directed by diocesan or school policy.
- Counsel students in good health habits.
- Instructs classes in skills relating to health, first aid, and emergencies.
- Participates in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students.
- Continues professional development to remain current in the field.
- Performs any other job‑related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.
- Must demonstrate personal self‑discipline, be adaptable, and be flexible in routine and unexpected situations.
- Must use good judgment in daily encounters and use verbal and written language correctly.
- Must demonstrate an appropriate sense of humor.
- Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
- Must maintain appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel;
reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to stand for periods of time outside in the heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The position will require some evening and weekend hours.
This position's performance will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Principal.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTThis is an eleven‑month employee (paid hourly). Open to full‑time or part‑time. The Leadership Committee under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix establishes base salaries and stipends. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided before a new school year starts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION- Preference given to a practicing Catholic, but faithful persons of other faiths are welcome (admin jobs must be practicing Catholic).
- Must be willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non‑Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy.
- Must have Arizona School Nurse Certification.
- Must keep the hearing screen certificate current.
- Must have experience in working with children and/or school health programs; genuine liking for and ability to work with children.
- Must have current CPR certification.
- Must be in good physical condition.
- Must have initiative, creativity, and problem‑solving skills; judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations; proficiency in communication skills with both children and adults; positive attitude in crisis situations and ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Must have knowledge and understanding of positive disciplinary techniques and child psychology.
- Receive Safe Environment Training and sign the Code of Conduct.
- AZ Fingerprint clearance completed.
