Cross Country Coach - Assistant at Xavier College Preparatory
Purpose & ScopeUnder the supervision of the principal and the athletic director, the assistant coach helps to coordinate and administer the sport she or he is responsible for, following the guidelines and regulations of the National Federation of High Schools, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Diocese of Phoenix, the school, the athletic department, and the specific conference.
The coach contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community. They bear witness to Christ, His Church, and the teachings of our Catholic faith, collaborating in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students. The position requires obtaining necessary certificates, participating in continual professional development, maintaining detailed records, and serving as a mentor and campus minister to all students.
Essential duties include effective communication by phone and email, accurate completion of all duties, timely delivery, flexibility, forward thinking, meeting deadlines, and applying the latest coaching practices with creativity and latitude.
Essential Job Functions- Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and training to achieve individual and team success while promoting the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program, maintaining discipline, handling grievances, and increasing morale and cooperation.
- Assist in the overall functioning of the specific sport’s program.
- Assist the Head Coach in ensuring that the venue is safe and all equipment is within regulation, properly maintained, and inventoried.
- Assist in coordinating the supervision of student‑athletes in all areas of play, locker rooms, and venues used by the sport.
- Maintain open communication with faculty, staff, and parents; advise student‑athletes on academics; assist in college recruiting and scholarship applications in conjunction with the athletic director and guidance staff.
- Personal self‑discipline, adaptability, and flexibility in routine and unexpected situations.
- Good judgment in daily encounters; correct use of verbal and written language.
- Appropriate sense of humor.
- Knowledge of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
- Appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.

The job requires standing, sitting, walking, using hands, reaching, talking, hearing, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close and distance vision and focus adjustment. The employee must be able to stand for periods of time outside in heat and cold. The noise level is usually moderate, and the position may require evening and weekend hours. EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated according to procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Principal and Athletic Director.
Terms of EmploymentThis is a stipend position based on the season of the sport coached. The Leadership Team under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix establishes base salaries and stipends. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year.
Minimum Qualification- Preference given to Catholic teacher.
- Certified by the Arizona State Department of Education or AIA as a coach and meets applicable NCA requirements.
- Must meet Diocese of Phoenix employment requirements.
- Received Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct.
- FBI fingerprint clearance completed.
- Arizona State driver’s license is desirable.
