General Summary
GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an intern in our Zero Emission Systems Team in the summer of 2026. This unit performs research, development, and demonstrations focused on technology and information aimed at greenhouse gas emission quantification, mitigation, environmental impacts, energy infrastructure integrity, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, procedural review, renewable energy, hydrogen adoption, technology validation and integration.
Under the direction of the project’s Principal Investigator, the qualified candidate will perform hands‑on tasks involving test set up and instrumentation for data collection, assist in engineering/scientific assignments, and receive training to contribute to tasks related to ZEST.

Work LocationThis internship is based at GTI Energy Headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois (Chicagoland area). Interns will primarily work on‑site in the lab Tuesday–Thursday, with flexibility for hybrid scheduling when possible. Depending on project and lab needs, on‑site work may be required up to five days per week.
The role includes hands‑on lab support, instrumentation and data collection, and occasional field work, including travel to operator sites to collect samples and measure methane emissions.
Primary Responsibilities- Perform hands‑on tasks involving test set up and instrumentation for data collection in the lab and in the field to support cross‑cutting research efforts throughout the energy industry.
- Perform engineering/scientific assignments under the general direction of project Principal Investigators.
- Write and contribute to technical reports and white papers to effectively communicate the findings from research projects.
- Travel for customer site visits, field demonstrations, or testing.
- Attend safety meetings, safety training, and apply safety standards.
- Participate actively in project teams.
- Adhere to project scope, deliverables, and budgets.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Research interests in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing environmental impacts from energy infrastructure and its operations.
- Research interest in natural gas systems and associated industry R&D needs.
- Ability to think logically and apply knowledge to new and unique situations.
- Ability to think critically and troubleshoot equipment/issues in the field.

- Preference will be given to candidates in their final year of a bachelor’s program or currently pursuing a graduate degree in geosciences, energy systems, or a related STEM field.
