Custodian

A school custodian ensures a clean, sanitary, and safe learning environment for students and staff. Responsibilities include daily cleaning (mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing), waste removal, minor maintenance, and securing facilities. They often work independently, following established safety and cleaning procedures.

• Cleaning & Sanitizing:
  Thoroughly clean and disinfect classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, hallways, and offices. This includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors, and shampooing carpets.
• Waste Management:
  Empty, clean, and disinfect trash receptacles; dispose of waste into proper compactors or dumpsters.
• Facility Maintenance:
  Perform minor repairs, such as replacing light bulbs, fixing broken switches, unclogging toilets, and repairing door handles.
• Safety & Security:
  Secure the building by locking doors and windows, and activating alarm systems. Monitor for, and report, safety hazards.
• Setup & Event Support:
  Rearrange and set up furniture, chairs, and tables for special events, meetings, or athletic activities.
• Grounds Upkeep:
  Maintain exterior areas, including sweeping walkways, removing debris, and assisting with snow removal (shoveling, salting).
• Inventory & Equipment:
  Manage, stock, and properly store cleaning supplies; maintain custodial equipment (buffers, vacuums).

• Education:
  
  High school diploma or GED is usually required or preferred.
• Experience:
  
  Prior custodial or maintenance experience is often preferred, though many positions offer on-the-job training.
• Physical Requirements:
  
  Ability to stand and walk for long periods, lift heavy objects (up to 50–75 lbs), climb ladders, and work with cleaning chemicals.
• Skills:
  
  Strong attention to detail, time-management skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

• Schedule:
  
  Often requires evening, night, or weekend shifts.
• Environment:
  Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, and noise.
• Nature of Work:
  Primarily manual labor in a fast-paced environment.

School custodians are considered essential personnel and may be required to work during, or immediately following, emergency situations.
