JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in OR on a particular shift, in accordance with established patient care plan and philosophy. Will provide care and support to patients before, during and after surgery; will assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.

Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Surgery Nursing Director and/or designee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education

Graduate of an accredited program in nursing.

Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) degree required.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years nurse experience in an acute healthcare setting preferred. OR nurse experience preferred.

License/Certification

Current Tennessee State Licensed Practical Nurse with no restrictions

Current CPR/Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 30 days of hire date

Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for fulltime employees or within 1 year of hire date

Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required for fulltime employees or within 1 year of hire date

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operating Room Patient Care

May perform Circulating Nurse duties:
Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient.

Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens.

Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis in creating and maintaining the sterile field. Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly.

Documents in the patient EHR accurately.

Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.

May perform Scrub Nurse duties:
Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon. Performs sharp and instrument counts according to policy

Call is Required

Patient Care

Provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

Initiates admission assessment within two hours of arrival to the unit, including pain assessment.

Completes admission assessment of the patient according to procedure within 24 hours.

Monitors patient condition throughout shift according to unit care standards, including the reassessment of pain.

Demonstrates ability to interpret changes in patient condition and abnormal lab values as evidenced by shift communication and documentation in the medical record.

Initiates a written plan of care on admission.

Initiates and incorporates the nursing plan of care: nursing interventions specific to the patient's age and identified needs; measurable patient outcomes, discharge planning.

Reviews and appropriately updates the nursing plan of care.

Works with the patient or family in the development of the plan of care.

Requests consultation, based on assessment data, to assist in problem solving or facilitation of care as evidenced by random observation and documentation in the medical record.

Administers medications, including I.V. fluids, according to policy and procedure.
