Description

An HVAC Lead Startup Technician plays a vital role in the successful commissioning of newly installed heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and control systems. This position ensures that all equipment is properly installed, tested, and configured to operate according to design specifications and industry standards. In addition to technical expertise, the role often involves troubleshooting system issues, verifying performance metrics, and collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other trades to deliver fully functional and energy-efficient systems ready for occupancy and long-term operation.

Travel is required.

  • Perform startup and commissioning of HVAC systems (RTUs, chillers, boilers, VAVs, VRF systems, etc.) as well as warranty service and repair.
  • Verify system performance against design specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Balance air and water systems using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Conduct functional and performance tests on HVAC equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Ensure proper operation of thermostats, sensors, and control panels.
  • Complete startup checklists, commissioning reports, and system documentation.
  • Record system readings, deficiencies, and corrective actions taken.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to project managers or engineers.
  • Provide training and system orientation to building owners or maintenance staff.
  • Address customer concerns and ensure satisfaction with system performance.
  • Follow all safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
  • Ensure systems comply with local codes, standards, and energy efficiency requirements.
  • Coordinate with installation teams, controls technicians, and project managers.
  • Support quality assurance and punch list completion.

Requirements

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • 5+ YEARS OF HVAC EXPERIENCE, PREFERABLY IN SERVICE, STARTUP OR COMMISSIONING ROLES.
  • FAMILIAR WITH COMMISSIONING SOFTWARE, FIELD SOFTWARE TOOLS SUCH AS FIELD ASSIST, PRISM, ETC. NOT REQUIRED.
  • EPA UNIVERSAL CERTIFICATION REQUIRED.
