The Controller will oversee all accounting, fund reporting, and financial operations across affiliated entities. This role is responsible for ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, investor reporting accuracy, and transaction execution across development, acquisitions, and operating assets.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in multifamily real estate, including acquisitions, development, and property management, and will play a central role in scaling the accounting function in a disciplined, sustainable manner while collaborating cross-functionally with leadership and operations teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 1. Accounting Leadership & Operational Oversight
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, establishing clear expectations, accountability, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to internal controls.
  • Partner with executive leadership to improve processes, enhance reporting capabilities, and scale systems to support future growth.
2. Financial Reporting, Compliance & Controls
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including financial statements, consolidated reporting, and cash flow forecasting.
  • Review and validate property management, ancillary, asset management, development, and acquisition fee calculations in accordance with governing agreements.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking institutions.
  • Oversee bank account structures and financing logistics in coordination with lenders.
  • Maintain hands‑on familiarity with reconciliations, supporting schedules, and documentation.
  • Oversee annual CAM reconciliations for commercial tenants and condominium associations.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and mitigate risk.
  • Approve and oversee defined expenditure workflows, payment approvals, and funding processes.
  • Oversee development draw processes to ensure timely funding and vendor payments.
  • Review and approve disbursements, wire transfers, and funding requests.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to senior management to support strategic decision‑making.
3. Investor Reporting & Capital Support
  • Partner closely with investment leadership on capital raises, acquisitions, and development initiatives to ensure seamless integration into accounting and finance functions.
  • Own financial disclosures, tax coordination, and distribution accuracy.
  • Ensure investor and lender reporting is accurate, timely, and supported by consistent processes.
  • Support investor communications as needed.
  • Maintain visibility into guarantees, covenants, lender requirements, and long‑term obligations.
4. Audit & Tax
  • Manage preparation of federal and state tax returns in coordination with external accounting firms.
  • Lead coordination of annual audits and tax reviews, as required.
5. Accounting Operations
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and annual 1099 reporting.
  • Ensure accounting procedures and internal controls operate effectively.
  • Identify and resolve complex accounting issues as they arise.
6. Technology, Systems & Process Optimization
  • Evaluate, implement, and optimize financial systems and platforms in collaboration with investment and operations teams.
  • Ensure system implementations align with practical workflows and operational execution.
  • Leverage dashboards and reporting tools to drive insight into portfolio performance and operational efficiency.
  • Champion continuous improvement through automation, standardization, and data integrity initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven leadership experience in multifamily real estate accounting and finance.
  • Strong understanding of accounting systems, internal controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a growth environment.
  • Experience scaling accounting teams, systems, and processes.
  • Comfortable working in a hands‑on, high‑growth setting.
