Position: Sr. Payment Variance Specialist

The Sr. Payment Variance Specialist has detailed knowledge of insurance contracts and ensures that all paid claims are compliant with the detailed terms of the contract. The position collaborates with insurance representatives and provider contract representatives to submit claims for any underpayments to ensure compliance with contract terms.

Core Job Functions
  • Utilizes healthcare and auditing experience to estimate the “expected payment” per contract terms that should be collected on each account.
  • Escalates audit issues to resolve incorrect expected model rates in the finance system with managed care leadership, ensuring financial reserves are accurate, especially when manual calculations differ from system-generated reimbursements.
  • Resolves data discrepancies by correcting incorrect data points, such as wrong insurance plans loaded, and flags trends for feedback to prevent false variances.
  • Participates as a key resource in quality contract management, representing the system at payer meetings and with payer contracting representatives. Serves as a resource for managed care contract leadership, including the CFO.
  • Prepares insurance disputes to obtain additional payments on cases with payment variances, making decisions on claim validation using advanced contract knowledge, and escalating trends to the Payer Steering Committee or legal avenues when appropriate.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert, providing feedback on contract improvements during negotiations.
  • Participates in workflow development and software optimization to streamline processes and enhance productivity.
