Position Summary

The Addictions Counsellor supports clients admitted to Battlefords Treatment Centre in making positive, healthy changes in their lives. This role works directly with individuals struggling with substance use and related life challenges, providing counselling, guidance, and structured programming in a culturally respectful and recovery-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities Program Management
  • Develop and formalize individualized client treatment plans following admission and pre-assessment
  • Provide primary counselling support to assigned client groups while encouraging participation across all programming
  • Facilitate and manage group dynamics to motivate and engage clients
  • Utilize Battlefords Treatment Centre resources and respect diverse therapeutic approaches
  • Assess at-risk clients, respond to crisis situations, and complete risk/triage assessments
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and complete client files
  • Identify appropriate treatment modalities for client care
  • Stay current with addictions research, best practices, and treatment approaches
  • Adhere to organizational policies, communication protocols, and ethical standards
Operational Duties
  • Dispense and document medications when required, in accordance with prescriptions and policy
  • Complete accurate documentation including charting, progress notes, incident reports, and discharge summaries
  • Conduct routine client room checks as required
  • Facilitate client orientation and intake procedures
  • Complete Treatment Summary Reports (TSRs) promptly upon discharge or termination
  • Attend mandatory meetings, training sessions, and supervision
  • Follow weekly planning schedules and assigned roles
  • Supervise client activities when scheduled, including meal supervision
  • Support accreditation standards and CARF requirements
  • Report any unethical or inappropriate behavior immediately
Client Support
  • Provide culturally informed guidance and support aligned with centre practices
  • Maintain clear professional boundaries at all times
  • Offer one-to-one counselling based on client needs and urgency
  • Encourage client growth in spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical wellness
  • Provide constructive, strengths-based feedback on client progress
  • Assign appropriate resources and activities to support recovery and personal development
  • Motivate and engage clients through consistent, respectful interactions
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education and/or certification in addictions counselling or a related field
  • Experience working with individuals affected by substance use
  • Strong communication, documentation, and crisis-response skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to ethical practice, professionalism, and cultural respect
