Overview

Join to apply for the 2nd Class Shift Engineer role at Northland Power Inc.

This role is on-site at Northland’s North Battleford Energy Centre, located approximately 15km southeast from the city of North Battleford, Saskatchewan. This role requires relocation to the Battlefords area. The incumbent will oversee the operation and maintenance of our nominal, 260-megawatt, North Battleford Combined Cycle facility and report to the Chief Engineer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the plant HRSG, pressure equipment, piping, and related equipment as per Saskatchewan Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and Regulations.
  • Supervise shift operations by providing direction to assistant shift engineers and issuing work permits to maintenance staff and contractors.
  • Maintain shift operating logs and records as required by regulation.
  • Operate BOP using an Ovation DCS, and plant turbines, both the General Electric 7FA.04 gas turbine and the Alstom steam turbine, via the GE Mark VIe DCS.
  • When needed, perform Assistant Shift Engineer duties, such as equipment rounds, water tests, LOTO, and operate the site water treatment plant.
  • Implement plant and company policies including coordination of emergency response.
  • Monitor and remotely start & stop Northland Power’s Spy Hill Generating Station LM6000 gas turbine units (2) via an Ovation DCS and the GE HMIs.
  • Communicate with the Grid Control Centre and implement requests within stringent timelines.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance tasks, inspections and troubleshooting.
  • Work various shifts and occasional overtime, assist with annual plant outage maintenance and coordination.
  • Recommend plant improvements to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Oversee safe handling and transfer of bulk chemicals as necessary.
  • Ensure chemical analysis and control for steam, boiler water, cooling and condensate systems, potable and final wastewater.
  • Implement and maintain Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures; coordinate safe release of equipment for maintenance.
  • Handle inert and explosive gases (H2, N2, O2, acetylene, CO2).
  • Maintain plant and site security.
  • Provide training to personnel on plant operation and support certification advancement.
  • Utilize site CMMS system as it applies to the role.
  • Develop familiarity with major vendor documentation and operate equipment per manufacturer instructions.
  • Perform or assist with maintenance operations on site as required.
  • Assist site team with engineering studies and upgrades to optimize plant efficiency in areas of expertise.
  • Identify opportunities to apply new technologies to conserve fuel and reduce downtime.
  • Collaborate with other groups within Northland Power to develop a network of support.
  • Develop and implement plant performance monitoring systems to identify reliability, efficiency and cost improvements using electronic technologies.
  • Encourage innovations and collaborate with all personnel.
  • Assist with environmental and health and safety policy development and participate in related teams.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications And Experience
  • Holder of a valid 2nd class power engineer’s license in Saskatchewan. Consideration may be given to a 3rd Class Power Engineer with 3 papers toward the 2nd Class certificate.
  • Powerplant or large industrial plant experience; combined cycle power plant experience is an asset.
