Position Summary

Part‑time Associate Faculty pool. The role is an Associate Instructor in the School of Continuing Education at West Valley College, teaching noncredit courses in current topics for older adult populations. Assignments are as needed during Spring, Summer and/or Fall semesters.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education & Experience – Possess either of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught; AND either:
    • Thirty hours or two semester units of course work in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district; OR
    • One year of professional experience working with older adults.
  • An associate degree with a major related to the subject of the course taught; AND two years of occupational experience related to the subject of the course taught; AND sixty hours or four semester units of coursework in understanding the needs of the older adult, taken at an accredited institution of higher education or approved by the district.
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching in the subject area of expertise, preferably adult populations.
Instructional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in‑class or online/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class and/or online, and maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, 0.5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom and a positive working environment free from harassment, prejudice and bias.
  • Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual.
