Note:
This recruitment for “Maintenance Worker – Facilities” is for the Facilities Division in the Transportation and Public Works Department. Additional recruitments will be open simultaneously for other Maintenance Worker positions in other City Departments. Applications must be submitted for each position/department you are interested in.

This is an entry‑level position in the maintenance series. Maintenance Workers perform physical labor in construction, maintenance and landscaping assignments. Work is closely supervised and performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. Maintenance Workers can be assigned to any one of the field maintenance divisions described below.
Essential Duties- Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions;
- Drive light trucks and dump trucks and operate other construction equipment;
- Use a wide variety of large, small, and hand manual, power, pneumatic, and hydraulic tools;
- Shovel/dig, load, unload and transport earth, debris, or construction materials;
- Set up traffic cones and barricades to channel traffic;
- Read maps, blueprints, diagrams and work orders;
- Assist the public and warn them of hazards;
- Clean, lubricate and maintain trucks, equipment and tools used on the job;
- Maintain daily work logs and inventories;
- Dispose of litter, broken glass, debris and brush;
- Repair and/or report vandalism, damage or major maintenance requirements.
- Clean up of biohazards, e.g., animal carcass removal, human/animal waste clean-up;
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of uses and purposes of a wide variety of general construction tools and equipment; basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power equipment, working in traffic and under hazardous conditions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; learn to use standard manual, power, pneumatic, hydraulic and custodial equipment; perform general building maintenance and repairs requiring the ability to climb ladders and reach for objects; repeatedly dig and lift shovels of earth or debris weighing at least 35 pounds; work with various fluids and chemicals using normal protective wear; set up and remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects;
learn job‑related material through oral instruction, observation and reading; understand and carry out oral and written directions in order to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner; take basic measurements of boards or spaces; fill out work orders, daily logs of work performed and perform physical inventories; learn to use computer technology as necessary to complete job tasks, e.g., complete online timecard, send/read email, complete online training;
maintain good working relationships with co‑workers and volunteers; communicate with the public in a tactful and effective manner; work various work schedules including weekend shifts and possibly called out for emergency work at night, on weekends or holidays.
Experience – Six months of experience in heavy manual work.
Education – Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
