Description of PositionUnder the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Nurse Manager performs key responsibilities and meets position requirements as outlined in the hospital's RN job description. In addition to those RN duties, the Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for unit operations, fiscal and staff management, managing patient care services and coordinating staff scheduling. The Nurse Manager will support and direct nursing staff assignments and facilitate communication with other disciplines, departments and community resources.
This includes direct supervision of employees and conducting performance evaluations. The Nurse Manager maintains knowledge of, participates in further training provided, and understands the potential risks regarding occupational health hazards (e.g., blood borne pathogen exposures).
- Unit Operations – In conjunction with peer Nurse Managers and CNO, maintains 24‑hour accountability for the success of assigned units; oversees unit operations including timely completion and review of multidisciplinary treatment plans (MTP), checking logs (refrigerator, emergency cart log, POC testing, legal tracking logs), and PYXIS discrepancy resolution; responsible for accurate and timely completion of all nursing documentation; alerts the Administrator on Call (AOC) when urgent or extreme events occur (e.g., AWOL patients, patient injuries, staff injuries, incidents involving law enforcement);
reviews House Supervisor daily end‑of‑shift report and follows up as needed; prepares and investigates Incident Reports (IR) in an accurate and timely fashion and follows up with staff education to prevent reoccurring incidents; maintains a clutter‑free working environment. - Fiscal and Staff Management – Ensures cost‑effective labor & supply resource management; through close working relationships with the House Supervisors and Charge RNs, directly and indirectly supervises nursing staff on assigned units; collects staff performance data from the House Supervisors to ensure proper supervision and to provide accurate meaningful introductory and annual performance evaluations; collaborates with CNO to address performance concerns or potential need for staff disciplinary measures;
supports CNO, House Supervisors, and nursing staff to provide a high‑quality orientation and ongoing education for clinical staff; ensures staff education on key issues relating to hospital policies and procedures and health care regulations; ensures accurate and timely shift‑to‑shift reports are completed by charge nurses. - Manage Patient Care Services – Monitors clinical issues for high‑acuity patients or patients with unusual problems; in conjunction with hospital leaders, addresses and resolves patient and family complaints; proactively works with CNO when a complaint becomes a potential grievance and alerts the hospital's Internal Patient Advocate.
- Staff Scheduling – Monitors all nursing staff attendance records cards for unapproved overtime, missed meal periods, and patterns of attendance and punctuality; completes time records for all staff and forwards to payroll each pay period; analyzes and approves online time cards in a timely fashion; works closely with the Staffing Scheduling Coordinator to prepare staff schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels for upcoming shifts;
reviews staff level concerns with CNO.
Education / Licensure
