Job SummaryThe Medication Technician is responsible for facilitating clients’ self-administration of medications and supporting the medical care of residents in the residential setting. Working under the supervision of a licensed nurse or physician, the Med Tech ensures accurate medication self-administration, monitoring, and documentation. The role also involves supporting residents in early recovery, many of whom may be withdrawing from substances of abuse or receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
Key Responsibilities- Oversee self-administration of prescribed medications (including MAT medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone) according to physician orders and facility protocols.
- Accurately document medication self-administration, resident responses, and any side effects or refusals.
- Monitor residents for withdrawal symptoms, medication side effects, or medical complications, and promptly report findings to licensed staff.
- Comply with California DHCS regulations, Title 22, and CARF/Joint Commission standards as applicable.
- Perform routine health monitoring (e.g., complete vital signs).
- Support residents during detox and stabilization with compassionate, trauma-informed care.
- Maintain accurate medication inventory, conduct shift-to-shift medication counts, and ensure secure storage in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Participate in regular training on safe medication practices, MAT protocols, and emergency response procedures.
- Collaborate with the clinical and counseling team to support integrated, holistic care for residents in recovery.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and uphold strict confidentiality standards.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Current Medication Technician certification or completion of an approved medication administration training in accordance with California regulations.
- Prior experience working in a SUD or behavioral health residential facility strongly preferred.
- Basic knowledge of withdrawal protocols, MAT, and common withdrawal symptoms is highly desirable.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Ability to use an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for documentation.
- Compassionate, reliable, and able to maintain professional boundaries in a therapeutic setting.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access filing cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Occasionally moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
- Constantly remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Occasionally moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.

- Constantly communicating with others to exchange information.

- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Constantly sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
- Occasional light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Infrequent and medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
- Regular, predictable attendance is required.
- Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phones, printers, light traffic).
- Ability to work in a confined area.
