Position: Food Services Worker (CSR 1414)

Salary / Benefits

$21.01 - $24.85 hourly ( $43,692.48 - $51,677.60 annually), plus bilingual and uniform allowance when applicable.

The Santa Barbara County Probation Department is accepting applications to fill a vacancy (per CSR 1414) for Food Services Worker at the Santa Maria Juvenile Justice Center, located at 4263 California Blvd., Santa Maria, CA 93455.

Leave of Absence CSR 1414 NOTE
:
This recruitment is to fill a position vacated as a result of a leave of absence (CS Rule 1414) and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on leave. A person who is appointed to a position under CS Rule 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without re-application or re-testing, depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.

THE POSITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks involved in the serving of food in a custodial youth facility; cleans and maintains kitchen utensils, equipment, and work area; and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities (continued):

  • Drives to jail or other locations to pick up prepared food for the Santa Maria Juvenile Justice Center (JJC); loads food containers in vehicle; receives bulk meals delivered to the JJC; unloads food containers at the JJC; and refrigerates or places food containers in steam tables to maintain temperature.
  • Prepares for serving meal in dining room; determines number to be served; counts and puts out silverware for number to be served; portions out food onto food trays; checks special dietary food trays for ordered requirements; sets up and clears tables in the dining room; counts silverware at end of meal; prepares and loads food trays for youth without dining room privileges.
  • Cleans dining room and kitchen areas, including hot food warmer, with assistance from detained youth; washes, dries, stacks, and puts away trays, pans, and other kitchen utensils; cleans tables, benches, chairs, cupboards, storerooms, refrigerators, and other equipment; sweeps and mops floors, and empties garbage; maintains hygienic and sanitary standards in kitchen and dining rooms.
  • Follows security procedures including counting silverware, activating alarms, and reporting movement of youth in custody.
  • Six months of experience in food set up, service, and clean up; OR, a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Requirement: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required.

Knowledge of: standard units of measure and weight for liquid and solid food to portion out required quantities; basic math; basic practices for safe food storage and prevention of contamination; safe work practices in a kitchen; kitchen and floor cleaning and sanitizing products and proper usage.
