The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office has a vacancy for a Deputy District Attorney III in Santa Maria, California. The salary range is $ - $ annually. This recruitment will remain open until filled.

The mission of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office is to pursue truth and justice by employing the highest ethical standards in vigorously prosecuting the guilty, protecting the innocent, and preventing crime. The District Attorney has offices in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and Lompoc. The Office embodies a “team” approach to fighting crime, wherein Deputy District Attorneys, Investigators, Victim Witness staff, and support staff work closely together at all stages of a case.

The Office is dedicated to ongoing training and skill development, as well as fostering the development of new technologies to fight crime and achieve justice. Specialized prosecution units exist for violent crimes, gangs, vulnerable victims, and white-collar crime.

The Position

Under direction, performs a variety of complex criminal and civil investigations, trial preparations, and prosecutions; and related work as required.

The Ideal Candidate

The selected candidate will possess extensive experience handling high-level criminal prosecutions, which may involve homicides, multi-defendant trials, gang-related offenses, and/or child sexual abuse cases. This background should include advanced legal analysis, drafting and arguing complex motions, and a strong track record of collaboration with law enforcement partners. The candidate must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills, manage a demanding caseload, exercise sound judgment in fast-paced situations, and have deep knowledge of the California Rules of Evidence.

The role also requires being proactive, highly organized, and committed to working cooperatively within a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities
  • Interviews and advises complainants and witnesses regarding prospective criminal or civil actions; studies, interprets, and applies laws, court decisions, and legal authorities for use in prosecuting cases.
  • Prepares legal pleadings such as complaints, answers, demurrers, discovery, and judgments.
  • Prosecutes a variety of cases, including felony trials, misdemeanor trials, and presentation of preliminary hearings.
  • Performs related work such as preparing petitions and dictating legal instruments, complaints, reports, and correspondence.
  • Deputy District Attorney III — Employment Standards

    Active membership in the State Bar of California AND

    • Two years experience as an attorney in the practice of public law or four years as a general practicing attorney; OR
    • One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy District Attorney II with Santa Barbara County; OR
    • A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the above and provides the required knowledge, abilities and license.

    Additional Qualifications For Both Positions:
    Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required. Knowledge of: the organization, powers, and limitations of county governmental functions, civil and criminal codes, and the California Constitution; trial procedures and the rules of evidence; administrative law. Ability to: appraise, interpret, and apply legal principles and precedents to difficult legal problems; present statements of fact, law, and argument clearly and logically in written and oral form;

    prepare, present and conduct trials effectively; perform legal research; work effectively with others.
