Organization and Program

The New Mexico Department of Health's (NMHealth) mission is "To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico." The Occupational Health Surveillance Program (OHSP) is within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau (EHEB) in the Center for Health Protection under the Public Health Division in NMHealth.

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to perform health education and outreach activities for the Occupational Health Surveillance Program (OHSP) and collaborate with other programs within the Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau, as needed. This position provides support for preventing and addressing occupational health concerns (occupational disease and injury). Duties include collaborating with multiple stakeholders on identifying, addressing and preventing occupational disease and injury.

This position works closely with the Occupational Health Surveillance Program epidemiologist on occupational health injury or mortality investigations and strategies to maximize health education efforts. The incumbent will provide EHEB on-call services one to two days a month and support other bureau initiatives such as legislative bill analysis and public health urgencies.

How does it get done?

Produce and disseminate evidence driven educational materials on occupational illness and injury. Utilize and maintain multiple data sources, related to the program's occupational health surveillance systems, to understand and track occupational injury and disease in New Mexico. Responsibilities including tracking occupational notifiable conditions and providing case-management as needed.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or Education and one (1) year of experience in a health-related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel with the occasional overnight stay may be required.
