Hospice Administrator

Location: Santa Fe, New Mexico

Position Type: Full-time, Exempt

Reports to: COO / SVP Operations

Supervises: Clinical & administrative staff, including nurses, social workers, aides, volunteers

Position Summary

The Hospice Administrator will oversee and lead all operational, clinical, regulatory, financial, and strategic functions of our hospice services in the Santa Fe and surrounding territory. The individual will ensure delivery of high quality, patient- and family-centered end-of-life care, while maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead day-to-day operations of the hospice program, ensuring that clinical care, support services, and administrative functions operate smoothly and efficiently
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and quality assurance / performance improvement plans
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and accreditation standards (e.g. Medicare Conditions of Participation, state hospice licensing in New Mexico)
  • Serve as liaison to regulatory, licensing, and accrediting bodies
  • Prepare and manage the annual budget, monitor financial performance, and ensure fiscal stability
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, evaluation, and retention of staff
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team (clinicians, social services, spiritual care, volunteers) to ensure integrated and compassionate care
  • Oversee patient admission, care planning, discharge, bereavement, and other patient/family services
  • Address patient/family complaints and grievances in a timely and sensitive manner
  • Represent the organization externally — developing relationships with referral sources, community organizations, and stakeholders
  • Prepare reports for senior leadership, board of directors, and funding or regulatory entities
  • Implement and monitor risk management, safety, infection control, and compliance initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Business Administration, or a related field (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, PTA, OTA)
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in health care management, with at least 2–3 years in hospice, palliative care, or home health leadership
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hospice principles, end-of-life care, regulations, Medicare/Medicaid, and state licensing (New Mexico)
  • Proven ability to lead a multidisciplinary team in a clinical setting
  • Strong financial acumen (budgeting, forecasting, cost control)
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, conflict resolution, and leadership skills
  • Proficiency with health care information systems, electronic health records, and data reporting
  • Compassion, emotional resilience, and commitment to patient- and family-centered care
Preferred / Additional Qualifications
  • Degree in Health Administration, Master of Business Administration (MBA) with healthcare focus, RN with leadership experience, or Therapist
  • Experience with accreditation bodies (e.g. CHAP, Joint Commission)
  • Previous experience in a rural or diverse community setting
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) or proficiency in additional languages prevalent in New Mexico
Working Conditions &

Physical Requirements
  • On-site work required; some travel may be necessary within the service area
  • Occasional evening or weekend work expected (for meetings or emergencies)
  • Must be able to visit patient homes or facilities
  • Ability to lift light loads (files, office equipment)
  • Must be able to respond in a timely manner to urgent situations

Licensing & Regulatory Notes (New Mexico)
  • Hospice providers must hold a valid hospice license under New Mexico regulations.
  • The agency must maintain compliance with state health facility licensing, certification rules, and oversight by the New Mexico Division of Health Improvement.
