Position: Archivist III | State of New Mexico (Santa Fe, NM)

Archivist III | State of New Mexico (Santa Fe, NM)

This position exists to support the management and preservation of historical and legal records, ensuring their accessibility for the public, researchers, and government entities. The Archivist III is responsible for maintaining the integrity, organization, and accessibility of records, accounting and preservation. Key responsibilities include accessioning, processing, preservation, arrangement, description, reference assistance, inventory, and outreach. The Archivist III will collaborate with division colleagues on high-priority projects, collections, and exhibits, while also having the flexibility to engage in projects of personal or professional interest.

Division priorities include the reprocessing of public and private collections and selective digitization of materials for inclusion in a publicly accessible database.

Duties for this position include
  • Assist researchers, locate records using databases, and respond to inquiries within a two-week window
  • Conduct in-depth research and refer inquiries to appropriate divisions
  • Review control files, arrange and describe collections, and appraise materials for disposal
  • Digitize analog materials, enter metadata into Archives Space, and ensure preservation of materials
  • Develop workshops, exhibits, and presentations, and coordinate events like Archives Month
  • Assist with annual inventory, track progress of requests, and document archival activities supporting strategic goals
The ideal candidate will possess
  • Ability to read/translate Spanish text
  • Knowledge of archival best practices and New Mexico history
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills
  • Capacity to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Experience in managing digital records
  • Understanding of rights management and copyright
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move storage boxes
Salary Range

$23.07 - $36.91 Hourly/ $47,989 - $76,782 Annually
