Overview
Under the general supervision of the Risk Management Supervisor, promotes a safe and healthy work environment by inspecting, investigating, analyzing, and reporting on safety practices throughout Santa Fe County departments and public places within jurisdiction of the County. Develops and implements safety programs and training sessions.
Responsibilities- Coordinates and implements safety rules and regulations, and policies and procedures for the County, ensuring compliance with safety policies and laws. Conducts safety-related training sessions such as defensive driving, hazard communications and general safety.
- Attends seminars and workshops to ensure compliance with new and revised regulations, develops procedures and coordinates claim activities; prepares recommendations for safety policies and procedures, keeps abreast of new techniques in professional safety, standard first aid, and CPR industrial hygiene, works in cooperation with Risk Manager to investigate and prepare findings on work related accidents, and ensures all pertinent information is promptly obtained, documented, and maintained.
- Communicates with Directors, Elected Officials, supervisors and employees to implement and modify programs to minimize accidents; prepares recommendations for eliminating hazards affecting both employees and the general public.
- Promotes safe work habits and prevents personal injuries and damages to property, develops and monitors work place safety standards, performs safety inspections and reassessments of working conditions of County owned/leased facilities, vehicles/equipment safety hazards, and public places within jurisdiction of the County to ensure conformance with established safety procedures and practices; monitors employee use of protective devices; conducts driver’s license checks, organizes safety drills.
- Develops monthly inspection reports, including work orders for all findings and submission of inspection findings via email to Department Directors. Maintains tracking of monthly inspection reports on an excel spreadsheet. Monitors work order completion and follow up.
- Transports employees for alcohol and drug testing, prepares correspondence and reports, maintains required logs and filing system, and ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws related to safety and loss prevention.

- Knowledge
:
Thorough knowledge of risk management, occupational safety and health regulations, OSHA standards, NFC, NEC regulations, MUTCD manual requirements, state workers’ compensation laws and regulations; investigating methods and techniques; training methods and techniques facility, equipment and vehicle safety standards; and of CPR and basic first aid. - Skills
:
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees and the public, and conduct effective training. - Abilities
:
Ability to work on multiple tasks and meet deadlines; to deal effectively and tactfully with County officials, employees and the public; and to handle confidential information in a trustworthy manner. - Technical
:
Knowledge of office procedures and equipment including basic office machinery and skilled in operating various word-processing, spreadsheet, database and other software programs in a Windows environment, skilled in operating various testing equipment including measuring tapes, cameras, and compass apps.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus three (3) years of experience in business or public administration, industrial safety, organizational loss control, or related safety and health experience.
- Related college education may be substituted at a rate of 30 semester hours to one (1) year of experience.
- Certificate of completion in CPR and basic first aid or obtain this certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must possess and maintain an Advanced Safety Certificate within six (6) months of employment.
