Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. A Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, New Mexico State Library, established in 1929, is committed to providing leadership that promotes effective library services and access to information to all citizens of New Mexico.

The State Library provides services that support public libraries as well as delivers direct library services to rural populations, state agencies, the visually impaired and print disabled, and students and citizens conducting research. The Technical Services Bureau supports the technical needs of all departments at the State Library.

Why does the job exist?

This position resides in the Technical Services Bureau at the New Mexico State Library in Santa Fe. The Cataloging Librarian (Librarian) is responsible for cataloging, classifying, and processing all collections at the New Mexico State Library, including Rural Services. This position enables our users to readily identify and access our resources. This position is responsible for cataloging in all formats including online, serials, cartographic, and visual materials.

How

does it get done?

The Cataloging Librarian will apply national and local standards and policies when creating or editing bibliographic records in World Cat (OCLC) and import and maintain them in our Symphony database. This position follows these policies: LC-PCC, DCM, NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, SACO, OCLC, SALSA, and local Technical Services Bureau guidelines. The Cataloging Librarian classifies using the SuDoc (federal), NM State Doc, Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal schedules;

follows LC's CCM and GPO's Classification Manual. The cataloger applies terms from these controlled vocabularies: LCSH, LCGFT, LCDGT; and follows LC's CSM. The Librarian participates in bureau training and works closely with other staff in the Technical Services Bureau, Public Services Bureau, and Rural Services. The Librarian may participate in PCC, OCLC, and PPBL programs and may assist with cataloging materials for other SALSA libraries.

The position supports colleagues at the State Library and public libraries statewide to ensure effective and efficient library services to all New Mexicans.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has three (3) or more years of experience with library metadata creation and modification using the MARC 21 format, RDA, LCSH, SuDoc, DDC, and LC Classifications. The ideal candidate is extremely detail-oriented, technically savvy, has a knack for creative problem solving, and has excellent interpersonal skills.

Master's Degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country). Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work primarily takes place in an office setting with extensive computer user. Occasional investigations in library stacks involve some reaching, bending, grasping, lifting.
