Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. Among its primary functions is the management of the largest state sponsored museum system in the country.

Museum Resources Division (MRD) is a centralized services group comprised of skilled museum professionals dedicated to the state institutions known collectively as the Museum of New Mexico. MRD includes talented designers, woodworkers, mount makers, preparators, conservators, marketers, writers, editors and educators.

Why does the job exist?

The position of Exhibition Fabricator primarily builds museum exhibition furniture, pedestals, platforms and other exhibit components. As a member of the Fabrication team, this individual is also responsible for the installation and removal of exhibitions at the museums of the State of New Mexico in Santa Fe, and other facilities of the NM Department of cultural affairs. They utilize advanced level shop and woodworking skills to install exhibits.

The Fabrication team participates in conceptual design meetings, materials research, and provides time and cost estimates for various projects as part of a cohesive multi-team installation. Fabricators are ready to help oversee the build or installation of designed projects, ensuring their completion and installation. They are responsible for maintenance of the exhibit workshop, its tools, and to help monitor and coordinate the maintenance of its state vehicles

How does it get done?

Responsibilities include:

Fabricating casework and other items as per Designer's specifications.
Using drawings to plan and choose the best building techniques.
Making decisions on the finish of exhibit components and on installation needs.
Using design drawings for creating sheet good estimates and board foot estimates that ensure project is completed on time andbudget.
Balancing time and effort versus cost and availability of materials.
Supporting the conservation requirements of each object.
Also required are daily evaluations of the build needs within the time frame remaining Meeting deadlines in a timely manner for scheduled openings, all within a fixed budget and often under short time frames.

Who are the customers?

This position supports the DCA state museums and Historic Sites within the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and, by extension, the general public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:
The ability to multitask on numerous assigned exhibitions and other projects.
Must possess strong communication skills with colleagues and clients.
5 years woodworking experience and general shop experience using woodworking tools.
Understanding of safe usage of shop equipment and PPE.
High school graduate or higher.

Minimum Qualification

High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in woodworking and/or carpentry. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work will be conducted both in the fabrication shop, and in the museum galleries as required. There is also occasional travel to off-site locations outside Santa Fe. When working out of the shop, work is often conducted alongside licensed contracted professionals working on framing, electrical, paint and other finish products, and various other forms of residential and commercial building necessary for the exhibit.

At all times, team members must adhere to safety protocols for themselves and others, as changing work environments demand. A typical work day may include exposure to sawdust and noise. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds, as well as be able to work on ladders and scaffolding. When not in the workshop or installing exhibitions, working in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting.
