Bus Driver Trainee
Location: UC Santa Cruz Main Campus (Near Downtown).
Schedule: Part‑time, 32 hours per week (80% of full time).
Duration: 6‑month appointment.
Schedule includes: Day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
Salary: $25 per hour.
Benefits: Core benefits under UC policy.
Union Representation: SX Service Unit.

Job SummaryThe trainee will receive training to obtain a CA Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement and air‑brake certification to operate university passenger vehicles. Upon completion, trainees become eligible for senior Auto Equipment Operator positions.
Responsibilities- 45% – Obtain CA Class B License (Learning Permit, practical driving, skills & road tests, passenger endorsement, air‑brake certification).
- 45% – Operate vehicles (20‑41+ passenger shuttle bus, 7‑15 passenger van, 5‑passenger automobile) with a licensed Class B driver present, ensuring safe operation, adherence to routes, logs, and FCC radio protocol.
- 5% – Disability Van Service (DVS) Paratransit Support: drive and operate vehicles & tow trailers, maintain wheelchair lifts, complete reservation system, assist passengers with disabilities, and comply with DOT Title VI & FTA regulations.
- 5% – UCSC Policies & Safety Procedures: vehicle inspection, cleanliness, fueling, post‑trip checklist, and safety training.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of California Vehicle Code.
- Ability to operate university passenger vehicles safely.
- Accurate log and record keeping.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and customer service skills.
- Ability to drive under stress, including night and weekend shifts.
- Knowledge of FCC radio regulations and HIPAA confidentiality.
- Proficient in mapping tools and dispatch applications.
- Strong math skills and ability to follow written instructions.
- At least 21 years of age at the time of obtaining a Class B CDL.
- Professional driving experience.
- Knowledge of state, federal, and university vehicle safety and accessibility policies.
- Understanding of FCC radio guidelines.
- Knowledge of HIPAA standards.
- Background check & criminal history.
- Employment misconduct disclosure.
- Participation in DMV pull‑notice program.
- Missing driving record requirement.
- Participation in UC drug & alcohol testing program.
- Variable shift schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays.
- Compliance with Clery Act, Vaccination Policy, Child Abuse & Neglect Reporting Act.
Accepted candidates must disclose any misconduct within the last seven years as defined by UC policies.
