Overview

Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists is seeking an Oncology Technician Assistant to join their team.

Referral veterinary technicians work under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor. Incumbents assist practitioners to the fullest extent to improve the quality of care for patients, and to aid practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.

Responsibilities
  • Review oncology schedule and set up procedures/appointments for the day.
  • Assist doctor with chemotherapy administration; prepare patients for treatment; monitor patients during and after chemotherapy; release patient to owner and educate clients on home care procedures.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia for sometimes compromised patients; prepare and assist in surgical procedures; place IV catheters; administer fluids; recover patients post-op and hand over to ICU nurses as needed.
  • Properly clean, pack and autoclave surgical materials; keep the operating room stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient progress charts; enter all charges into the computer system; update in-hospital tracking forms.
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures (blood chemistries, CBC, Istat, electrolytes, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, fungal cultures) and draw blood for laboratory analysis.
  • Take, process and submit radiographs for VDIC review.
  • Admit and discharge patients on the doctor's orders; ensure patients being discharged are well-groomed and medically appropriate.
  • Answer client questions one-on-one on various aspects of animal care, excluding controversial items or those best left to veterinarians.
  • Communicate practitioner recommendations; explain medication dosage/purpose; reinforce at-home care instructions.
  • Provide follow-up updates on hospitalized patients and advise on additional visits if progress is not satisfactory.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies; inform inventory manager of items to order; understand usage and recommendations for prescription drugs.
Knowledge,

Skills and Qualifications
  • RVT license; minimum 3-5 years of experience
  • Knowledge of chemotherapy procedures and related treatments
  • Knowledge of use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment
  • Knowledge of instruments, materials, and procedures used in various treatments to assist DVM
  • TPR/physical assessment; drug administration and dosage calculation; venipuncture
  • Catheter placement; cystocentesis; CPR; critical care and emergency assessment skills
  • Radiology and anesthesiology skills; surgical assisting; post-surgical care and monitoring
  • Laboratory testing (CBC, chemistry, UA, viral tests, PT/PTT, Istat)
  • Equipment setup and monitoring (Doppler, Dinamap, SpO2, ECG, IV fluid pumps, anesthesia machines, suction pumps, crash cart, O2 cage)
  • Infectious/zoonotic disease recognition and knowledge; reception/communication skills
Physical Effort

Work often requires lifting and carrying animals up to 100 lbs. Assistance is available for larger animals. Standing for extended periods; often working in bent positions.

Working Conditions

Exposure to odors and noises; potential bites, scratches, and animal waste; possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Compensation

Pay Range: $26–$30 USD.
