Location: Santa Cruz, CA (Onsite)

Position Type: Part-Time Internship

Eligibility: Junior or Senior students studying Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Systems, AI/ML, or related fields

Compensation: Pay will vary depending on experience. Students may also be eligible to receive academic credit toward a course or program requirement, depending on their school’s policies.

As an AI/ML Intern at Paystand, you’ll work onsite in our Santa Cruz office with engineers and operations teams to make our workflows smarter and faster. This is a part-time role where you’ll have the chance to:

• Apply AI/ML to real-world challenges.
• Build prototypes and tools that improve productivity.
• Learn from experienced professionals while making a direct impact.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple departments, gaining exposure to a variety of business and technical perspectives.

This is a great opportunity for students who want hands‑on industry experience, are passionate about honing their craft, and want to see their ideas come to life.

• Partner with teams across Paystand to identify processes that can be improved with AI.
• Design and test prototypes that enhance our current tools and systems.
• Work with our tech stack (Node.js, Express.js, JavaScript, AWS, Kubernetes) to build and integrate solutions.
• Research and experiment with emerging AI/ML frameworks and tools.
• Deliver solutions on time and clearly present your findings to the team.
• Share fresh ideas, think creatively, and bring a multi‑dimensional approach to problem solving.
• Work toward a capstone project that you’ll complete and present to department leaders during the final weeks (weeks 10–11) of your internship.

• Currently a Junior, or Senior pursuing a relevant degree (CS, Data Science, AI/ML, etc.).
• Solid understanding of Machine Learning and AI fundamentals through coursework or projects.
• Experience with Python and frameworks like Tensor Flow or PyTorch.
• Exposure to our tech stack (Node.js, Express.js, JavaScript, AWS, Kubernetes) is a plus.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, meet deadlines, and adapt quickly.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, creativity, and confidence to contribute new ideas.
• Excitement about continuous learning and perfecting your craft beyond just school projects.
• Good communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.
