Associate Director of Clinical Services – Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Santa Cruz, CA

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Director of CAPS, the Associate Director for Clinical Services coordinates and ensures the quality of clinical services and programs in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This role provides leadership for the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical programs that support the mission of CAPS. All activities are conducted within the professional, legal, and ethical standards applicable to California mental health professionals.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Administration (40%)
    • Oversee clinical service delivery programs, monitoring clinical time, scheduling, templates, and standards of care.
    • Develop and maintain clinical services policies and procedures.
    • Collaborate with the Associate Director for Training on doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows’ services.
    • Participate in CAPS leadership committee and campus partner outreach.
    • Supervise CMCT or RISE staff, manage caseloads, conduct performance appraisals, and provide clinical supervision.
    • Recruit and select psychological services staff.
    • Oversee psychological testing, including ADHD assessment.
    • Monitor staff documentation and electronic health record updates.
    • Oversee quality assurance initiatives and clinical quality assurance committee.
    • Develop and implement staff training on services for students with diverse identities.
  • Direct Service (30%)
    • Provide assessments, case management, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and referrals.
    • Serve as backup for After‑Hours Crisis Services.
    • Supervise doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows.
    • Consult with staff, faculty, and campus partners on student mental health.
    • Develop outreach and psycho educational programs.
  • Crisis Management (15%)
    • Provide clinical direction and crisis backup, supervising urgent crisis cases.
    • Oversee quality of After‑Hours Crisis Service responses.
    • Collaborate with SHS and campus partners on crisis cases.
    • Conduct individualized clinical risk assessments.
  • Additional Responsibilities (15%)
    • Maintain active membership in national counseling organizations.
    • Facilitate CAPS committees and work groups.
    • Maintain accurate clinical documentation.
    • Promote a safe, healthy workplace and respond to injuries.
Appointment Information
  • Salary: $125,000 – $150,000 annually (budgeted)
  • Benefits Level: Full benefits
  • Schedule: Full-time, fixed (100%, 40 hrs/week, Mon‑Fri, day shift)

Required Qualifications
  • Valid California licensure in Psychology (or valid out‑of‑state licensure in Psychology, with California obtained within 180 days of hire)
  • 5+ years of clinical experience with increasing administrative responsibility
  • 3+ years of mentoring, supervising, and consulting with doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows
  • Expertise in crisis management and treatment of high acuity clients
  • Multiculturally responsive and trauma‑informed clinical skills for diverse identities
  • Experience coordinating and monitoring psychological service delivery
  • Experience in mental health clinic or counseling center administration
  • Knowledge of late adolescence developmental and mental health issues
  • Proficiency in brief and long‑term individual therapy and psychotherapy group facilitation
  • Design and implementation of psycho educational outreach, community programs, and crisis debriefings
  • Collaborative, professional communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Computer‑based electronic health records and scheduling software experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical and administrative experience in a college counseling environment
  • Experience with psychological assessment instruments appropriate for university students, especially ADHD assessment
  • Data analysis experience and interest
  • Doctorate from APA accredited program with APA accredited doctoral internship
  • Experience in an integrated counseling, psychiatry, and primary care environment
Special Conditions of Employment
  • Complete pre‑hire criminal history background and credentialing checks

  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or obtain within 60 days)
