Position title:

Pre‑six Lecturer History of Art and Visual Culture

Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five‑credit course is $8,872‑$9,986 (based on salary points 1‑5). Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.

Percent time:
Variable, based on the course load assigned.

Anticipated start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in fall quarter 2025 through fall quarter 2026. Initial appointments with effective dates outside the recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.

Position duration:
Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description

The Department of History of Art and Visual Culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach either during the academic year or Summer Session. We seek applications from outstanding candidates with experience to teach historic or contemporary period (see our list of courses ) in the following visual cultures:

  • Africa and its diaspora
  • Asia and its diaspora
  • Europe and the Americas
  • The Mediterranean
  • Native Americas
  • Oceania and its diaspora

The members of the department are committed to the investigation of art and visual culture from a wide range of theoretical perspectives. We seek colleagues with secure knowledge of visual materials and demonstrated interest in examining such materials and related issues within contexts of culture and history. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching.

Internal candidates will be given priority consideration.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted):

  • M.A. or MFA in art history/visual culture or a related field of study (e.g., media studies or communication); or M. Arch. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level.
