The Department of Statistics https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a tenured Full Professor and Department Chair. We seek outstanding candidates with demonstrated research and teaching expertise in the formulation, implementation and study of the properties of hierarchical models and related statistical methodology for large and complex datasets. The candidate’s work should be focused on the development of probabilistic models that provide explanatory and predictive tools for inference and decision making under uncertainty.
The successful candidate is expected to continue their established research program, advise graduate students in their research area, obtain external funding, develop and teach courses within the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, perform university, public, and professional service, and be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. Experience supervising and mentoring early career faculty and researchers is also highly desirable.

The newly formed Department of Statistics is part of the Baskin School of Engineering. The department has been established by the statistics group of the former Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department. The group has been present on campus since 2000, and has built a stellar reputation for its dynamism and innovation. Our graduate program has a steady throughput of professionals that perform brilliantly in academia, industry and government, and currently has about 40 students.
Research and instruction are supported by excellent facilities in the breathtaking environment of our campus. There are strong opportunities to collaborate with colleagues within the department as well as in the other existing programs in the School of Engineering, including Biomolecular Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computational Media, and Applied Mathematics, who work in a collegial and supportive environment.
More widely, our campus offers fertile grounds for scientific research in physical, biological and social sciences. Given the proximity of the campus to Silicon Valley, there are multiple opportunities for collaboration with investigators working on cutting edge science and engineering problems in institutions and companies in the area. Examples of these are NASA Ames, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, National Marine Fisheries Service of NOAA, Google, e-Bay, and The Climate Corporation, among others.
The new chair will have the opportunity to leverage the successful trajectory of the statistics group at UCSC, and project it to a higher level of excellence.
