Position Description

The Cal Teach Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach Cal Teach math and/or science seminars (EDUC 50B, EDUC 50C, EDUC 100A, EDUC 100B, EDUC 100C, EDUC 185L). These are seminar courses designed to introduce undergraduate math, science, and engineering majors to secondary math and science teaching careers;

support and augment their K-12 internship experience; and develop teaching skills, especially addressing the needs of students in high-need schools. Selected candidates will join an instructional team offering approximately eight classes each year, a sequence of seminars for groups of math majors, science majors, or combined math and science majors. Selected candidates will coordinate with the larger instructional team and with the Cal Teach staff to maintain coherence of the course sequence and to resolve issues that arise in student internship placements.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: expertise in pedagogy as it relates to math and science teaching, especially pedagogy that is designed to support culturally and linguistically diverse students; experience teaching in middle or high school classrooms, especially in high-need schools; and/or experience mentoring pre-service or in-service K-12 teachers.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • B.A./B.S. degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in a science, math, or engineering field; or a U.S. teaching credential with authorization to teach secondary science or mathematics.
  • A minimum of one semester of teaching experience in a U.S. public school setting.
