Position title: Merrill Elective Courses Pre‑six Lecturer
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach the standard five‑credit course is $8,531 – $14,523 (based on salary points 1‑19). Please see UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non‑senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre‑six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.
Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned (one standard, five‑credit course is 37.5%).
Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit’s instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2025 through spring quarter 2026. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position DescriptionMerrill College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach a course or courses that contribute to one or more of the college’s long‑standing interests, including social justice, public service, and understanding intersections between developed and developing worlds. Applicants should be able to draw from expertise in arts, engineering, humanities, physical and biological sciences, or social sciences.
Applicants with the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Professional experience in social justice or public service organizations or in arts or media production (e.g., theater, film, journalism);
- University‑level teaching experience as instructor of record or teaching experience with courses organized around fieldwork, service learning, or experiential education; and
- A demonstrated record of working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
The college is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to the inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching and other assigned duties.

QualificationsBasic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted):
- M.A/M.S. degree (or equivalent foreign degree); or five years of professional experience in a relevant area such as journalism, non‑profit management, field program coordination, film production, educational administration, etc.
- Experience teaching at the college level.
