Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Associate Medical Director and/or Medical Director, the Physician Assistant provides primary ambulatory care and telehealth services as part of the Student Health Services healthcare team. The incumbent assesses health status, evaluates and manages illnesses or injuries, provides initial psychological evaluation, promotes wellness, disease prevention, and health education, and coordinates appropriate follow‑up care, referrals, and case management.
The Physician Assistant serves 16‑20 patients per day, provides excellent medical care and attends to relevant psychosocial and developmental needs of university students, and serves on health center committees as needed.
- Direct patient care, including in‑person and telehealth visits in the Student Health Center clinic.
- Clinical assessment and management of routine health problems, acute illnesses, stable chronic illnesses, minor injuries, routine gynecological care, and sexually transmitted diseases.
- Evaluation and management of depression and anxiety in collaboration with counseling and psychiatric services.
- Ordering, interpreting, and communicating indicated screening and diagnostic exams.
- Recognition of life‑threatening situations and initiation of emergency treatment.
- Education and counseling of patients about physical and mental health, social habits, family planning, normal growth and development, and disease management.
- Support around issues commonly confronted by college students, such as sexual health, drugs and alcohol, and stress.
- Making appropriate referrals.
- Performing minor procedures such as laceration repair, incision and drainage, application of splints and casts, and treatment of minor burns.
- Initiating and managing care for patients requiring IV hydration or medication.
- Promoting continuity of care by assuming the role of primary care provider for patients with chronic or ongoing health issues using patient‑centered principles.
- Completing appropriate documentation, detailed charting, billing, and coding in a timely manner.
- Participating in peer review, committee work, and special projects as requested.
- Assisting where help is needed, which may include occasional nights or weekends.
- Working closely with other members of clinical staff—physicians, nurses, technologists, pharmacists and ancillary personnel—to provide efficient clinical care.
- Participating in quality management and other staff committees to monitor and improve clinical care.
- Contributing to special projects and outreach efforts.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- Current State of California Physician Assistant license, in good standing.
- Current DEA registration.
- Board Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA‑C).
- Significant experience in general medicine, urgent care, or family practice, typically obtained after three to five or more years of post‑training work experience.
- Experience in medical management of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and gender affirming care.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to listen, convey clear information, and communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff members.
- Demonstrated competency in working on a multidisciplinary team and contributing to team effort.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competency in serving a diverse student population.
- Flexibility and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a high‑volume workload and work independently under time pressures with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work on several tasks concurrently with frequent interruptions and maintain concentration in a fast‑paced environment; positive and cooperative manner with management and supervisory staff.
- Current or significant past college health experience.
