Position: Senior Counsel New

Position Description

The Senior Counsel will play a critical role supporting the Company’s project development work across the business. We are looking for a mid-level transactional attorney with 5-7 years of experience to help us across a range of needs. Primarily, this person will support ongoing projects, including providing legal support pre-construction efforts, environmental reviews, state and local regulatory needs, tax incentive work, procurement support, and additional legal needs across the company as they arise.

This role, which reports to our Deputy General Counsel, is ideal for a mid-level transactional attorney with experience supporting complex, heavily regulated construction projects who wants to stretch themselves in a dynamic environment.

We are not looking for a niche specialist: we want a lawyer who is comfortable being uncomfortable. Oklo is growing quickly and every day presents new opportunities and challenging legal questions. We care more about your ability to learn and grow than your specific substantive experience. If you thrive in fast-moving environments and are eager to grow, this role may be for you.

This is a remote role, but bonus points to someone located in a state where we have significant projects, including Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Idaho.

Specific responsibilities
  • Support our growing list of projects across their life cycle, including pre-construction, construction, environmental, commercial, and tax needs
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial, procurement, supply chain, partnership, vendor, and license agreements
  • Assist with state and local regulatory needs, including supporting government affairs and community affairs teams with permitting needs
  • Help mature our legal practices and approach, including routine commercial and operational matters
Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. state (preference for Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, or Idaho)
  • 5-7 years of transactional experience at a large law firm or in-house legal department
  • Experience with environmental permitting, compliance, and regulatory considerations affecting construction or development projects
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements
  • Experience working with companies that build complex, heavily regulated projects
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously
Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience in-house at a high-growth or startup company
  • Experience with transactional work supporting complex construction or development projects
  • Experience with joint ventures and/or project finance
  • Nuclear and/or energy experience
Who you are
  • Startup-minded: you value efficiency over hierarchy and thrive in a fast-paced team
  • Motivated: self-driven with a passion for the team and the mission
  • Team-player: you collaborate effectively and share credit
  • Excellent communicator: clear and upbeat, able to explain legal concepts to non-lawyers
  • Creative and proactive: comfortable solving open-ended problems and thinking creatively about approaches
  • Detail-oriented and fast-moving
  • Passionate about clean energy and making advanced fission a reality
  • Optimistic, resourceful, inquisitive, and able to learn quickly
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, iterative startup environment
