Full‑Time ESL Instructor (Tenure‑Track)

Mission College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Department is now accepting applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track instructor who shares our excitement for teaching and our commitment to excellence in education.

Assignment

This is a full‑time, 10‑month, tenure‑track faculty position that begins in Fall 2026. Instructional assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru Saturday as needed, and rotate among the ESL faculty. Over several years most levels of ESL offered at the college will be taught. This position is represented by the West Valley‑Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

  • Annual salary: $97,318 – $157,048 (10 months) based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1‑9).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – Possess one of the following:
    • Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis; OR
    • Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language; OR
    • A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in ESL; OR
    • The equivalent of the above.
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching, training, and/or cultural experiences which enable one to teach, tutor and mentor students from diverse linguistic, cultural, ethnic, socio‑economic, or educational backgrounds.
  • Experience in the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writing from beginning to advanced levels in social, professional, and academic contexts.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the linguistic and sociological needs of students whose native language is not English.
  • Knowledge and ability to demonstrate a variety of instructional approaches, techniques, and strategies in a variety of teaching modalities.
  • Experience using technology and course management systems.
  • Ability to take an active role in collaborating with faculty, student groups, and college support services, particularly within the Department and Division.
  • Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English.
  • Ability to develop English as a Second Language curriculum.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation, in‑class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students, and maintaining currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records.
  • Submit all necessary reports, such as attendance, rosters, class, and office schedules.
  • File a syllabus for each course with the appropriate division offices.
