Assignment

The position is full‑time, 10‑month, tenure‑track, beginning in Fall 2026
. Instructional assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday‑through‑Saturday, rotating among the ESL faculty as needed. Over several years, the instructor is expected to teach most levels of ESL offered at the college. The position is represented by the West Valley‑Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range:

  • $97,318 – $157,048 annually (10 months), based upon academic achievement, teaching experience, and related experience (Academic Salary Schedule, Steps 1‑9).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – Possess one of the following:
    • Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis; OR
    • Bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND a master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language; OR
    • A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in ESL; OR
    • The equivalent of the above.
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious, cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching, training, and/or cultural experiences that enable instruction, tutoring, and mentoring of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, ethnic, socio‑economic, or educational backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing from beginning to advanced levels in social, professional, and academic contexts.
  • Knowledge of the linguistic and sociological needs of students whose native language is not English.
  • Ability to demonstrate a variety of instructional approaches, techniques, and strategies in multiple teaching modalities.
  • Experience using technology and course management systems.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, student groups, and college support services within the Department and Division.
  • Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English.
  • Ability to develop English as a Second Language curriculum.
Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation, in‑class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation, and maintaining regular effective student contact for Distance Education courses.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records.
  • Submit necessary reports (attendance, grade reports, rosters, class and office schedules) when due.
  • File a syllabus for each course with the appropriate division offices.
  • Post and maintain office hours each week.
  • Provide each student with a current course syllabus and ensure compliance with Title 5 requirements.
  • Refer students to appropriate college resources.
