Job Summary
Assistant Resident Engineer – Department of Transportation – Santa Barbara County. Salary ranges from $6,488 to $12,152 per month based on classification level and experience. Position is permanent, full‑time.

Under direction of the Area Construction Senior Transportation Engineer and/or the Resident Engineer, incumbents perform transportation construction and engineering work in office and field settings. Responsibilities grow with experience from average to high difficulty.
Minimum Qualifications- Minimum qualifications for the classification (Consult Class Specification).
- Possession of a valid driver’s license for operational duties.
- For Range D appointments, a valid California Professional Engineering license (Civil) is required. Other ranges do not require a PE license.
- Verification of qualifications will be conducted prior to interview and/or appointment.
- Effective verbal and written communication; demonstrated interpersonal skills and partnership ability.
- Ability to balance multiple concurrent projects and tasks while prioritizing to meet deadlines.
- Application of experience and education to construction engineering and contract compliance principles, including construction and material testing.
- Identification of problems and logical analysis to provide sound engineering recommendations; knowledge of highway construction calculations and manuals.
- Experience working productively with contractors; enforcement of contract documents and conflict resolution.
- Development and maintenance of positive working relationships; effective teamwork.
- Progress on California PE licensing (tests taken and dates passed).

Field work includes earthwork, paving, lab work, and exposure to weather, chemicals, dust, noise, and vehicle operation. Work hours are 8:00‑5:00 M‑F with potential for night work, flexible hours, overtime, and travel. Office work is climate‑controlled but may fluctuate due to HVAC issues.
Rotation ProgramMandatory 24‑ to 33‑month rotation for permanent, full‑time Transportation Engineers (Civil) after probation. Assignments may involve design, construction, and elective units, with potential long‑term travel statewide.
