Our client is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel – Compliance & Risk who will provide strategic legal and risk management guidance across the organization. This role oversees insurance programs, claims, general liability, and commercial litigation matters while leading risk mitigation initiatives and supporting enterprise-wide compliance efforts. The position works closely with cross-functional teams to identify, assess, and proactively address risks that could impact the organization’s reputation, safety, or financial performance.
Key Responsibilities- Manage commercial and general liability litigation, including case strategy, depositions, hearings, status conferences, and oversight of outside counsel.
- Administer the organization’s insurance program, partnering with brokers and senior risk leadership to procure, place, and renew coverage.
- Provide legal advice on liability claims, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation to internal teams and leadership.
- Analyze loss and risk data to provide strategic recommendations to senior management.
- Lead and support risk management activities, including claims handling, risk transfer, and workers’ compensation matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contractual provisions, balancing legal risk with business objectives.
- Oversee internal investigations to ensure legal privilege and provide strategic recommendations on outcomes.
- Design and deliver compliance and risk training programs for staff and management.
- Collaborate with business teams to simplify complex legal concepts for non-legal stakeholders.
- Support discovery processes, including document review and production, for internal and external matters.
- Review and approve standard motions and other litigation-related documents.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior legal and risk management team members.
- Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures to reduce legal and operational risks.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent professional legal degree.
- Minimum of 6 years of legal experience, including at least 2 years in an in-house legal or risk management function.
- Experience managing litigation and insurance procurement.
- Proven ability to lead or significantly contribute to risk management initiatives.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- $200,000 - $260,000 Base pay (Based on experience).
