About Our School
Sanford High School is located in York County in Southern Maine 45 minutes south of Portland, less than 2 hours north of Boston, and only 15 minutes from the ocean and the lakes region. We are very proud of our state‑of‑the‑art, 360,000 square‑foot facility that intertwines High School and Vocational programming and includes a Performing Arts Center and athletic complex. Our school serves over 1,100 students in grades nine through twelve, with a growingly diverse student population that reflects our community.
Sanford High School operates on a semester block schedule and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) and the Maine State Department of Education. Sanford High School’s Program of Studies offers a comprehensive curriculum of approximately 150 courses and 25 Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The diverse selection of courses, CTE programs, and a multitude of Advanced Placement course offerings provide our students with unique opportunities to explore various career options.

Seeking applicants to fill a long‑term substitute position for a science teacher in our Alternative Ed Program. This position is to fill in for an employee who will leave at the end of March for the remainder of the school year. The preferred candidate would have experience teaching school‑aged students, specifically at the secondary level. The ideal applicant will be comfortable presenting course content to students with the aid of a cooperating teacher.
Although experience is preferred, it’s not necessary to apply.
The Alternative Ed Program offers students a smaller, quieter workspace with class sizes less than 12 students. The program is housed in a small pod in the high school, where three teachers work collaboratively to create a family‑like structure.
Essential Functions- Work collaboratively with colleagues to create engaging lessons for students.
- Promote critical and creative thinking and analysis.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials for subject area, and translate lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Design learning activities to demonstrate the application of science to everyday existence, including scientific research projects, demonstrations, experiments, and hands‑on activities.
- Instruct students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual student’s needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Ensure that student conduct conforms to the school’s standards and school district policies, and establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a cooperating teacher and other department members.
Standard teacher work schedule.
Certification / License- None required, but Maine State Certification as a Science Teacher preferred.
