Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Sanford’s successful Salmon division is looking for a permanent full-time Hatchery Assistant to join our Salmon Hatchery in Kaitangata, South Otago.
Our Kaitangata hatchery plays a crucial role, where over 1.5 million eggs are carefully nurtured annually from brood stock with over 30 years of natural selection. These eggs hatch into premium smolt, raised in the waters of the Clutha and Waitaki rivers before being transferred to our Stewart Island farm for further growth.
This role will suit you whether you’re already experienced in aquaculture work, or someone looking to start their career in the thriving aquaculture industry.
As key members of our small-dedicated team, you’ll enjoy performing hands-on tasks in an outdoor environment, to help support the sustainable production of our premium salmon smolt and brood stock.
About the roleWe carefully monitor our precious stock seven days a week, with our Hatchery Assistants working 10-hour days on a roster of four days on/ four days off, allowing for great work/life balance.
You’ll be responsible for assisting with:
- Spawning, egg incubation and sorting;
- Feeding;
- Grading, counting and transferring of fish;
- Routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tanks and filtration systems;
- Ensuring the hatchery facility is clean, organised and compliant with safety regulations;
- On call duty, responding to and remedying alarms as required.
