Responsibilities
The Wharton‑Smith Center for Construction at Seminole State College of Florida seeks a dynamic and innovative full‑time faculty member to teach core construction courses such as estimating, construction accounting and finance, construction plan reading, BIM, and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) technologies. The position is a regular full‑time teaching role on a track for continuing contract (tenure). The standard contract length is 228 days;
other contract lengths may be available depending on departmental needs.
- Project‑based teaching approach and supporting student learning.
- Maintaining the industry‑driven curriculum and the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) accreditation student learning outcome assessments.
- Supporting college policies, procedures, and inclusiveness.
- Participating in department and college activities and serving on committees.
- Engaging with community partners and participating in local humanitarian service‑learning projects.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with local high schools and university partners.
- Participating in grant writing proposals related to the construction industry.
- Attending college wide meetings and training as they apply to the construction, engineering and design departments. The professor will attend graduation ceremonies.
- Interfacing with local construction companies to remain current with workforce needs, to promote internship and mentoring opportunities.
- Plan, organize, and teach assigned construction classes; develop detailed outlines and syllabi as required.
- Make use of professional growth opportunities, including but not limited to the Seminole State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning.
- Incorporate teaching strategies that foster student learning, success, and retention.
- Engage students and support their learning success beyond the classroom.
- Work effectively, respectfully and productively with people from all cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- Maintain required student hours for individual and small group assistance.
- Advise students on academic progress matters.
- Collaborate with other faculty to support curriculum improvements that promote mastery of program competencies.
- Comply with college policies, procedures, and required deadlines.
- Participate in day, evening, and weekend program staffing as required; assigned campus location may vary due to enrollment (Sanford/Lake Mary, Heathrow or Oviedo campuses) and may require travel between campuses.
- Participate in committee work as requested.
- Contribute to a collegial and collaborative work environment.
- Become actively involved with the diverse community served by the college.
- Work with other college departments to engage community partners that support the College Mission and Vision.
- Perform all other site‑ and position‑specific responsibilities as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Building Construction, Construction Management, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Structural) or Architecture.
- Minimum two years of related professional experience.
- Master’s degree in Business, Business Administration or Project Management AND a Bachelor’s degree in Building Construction, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum six years of professional construction experience.
- Current professional license (PE, CGC, RA, or CPBD) registered in any U.S. state or territory, or industry‑recognized certification such as Certified Professional Contractor (CPC), Design‑Build Institute of America (DBIA) Certification or Project Management Professional (PMP).
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited institution in Construction or related discipline.
- Previous teaching experience at the college level.
- Minimum three years of direct in‑field project management experience (superintendent or project manager) and core construction skills such as estimating, scheduling, MEP systems, risk management, and project management.
