About the Role
The goal of the position is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic through streets, intersections, corridors and zones. In addition, the Maintenance Electrician's role is to operate and maintain city traffic systems and other related traffic devices and equipment and various electrical duties.
Core Competencies
Electrical Systems Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Proficiency in preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of streetlights, traffic signals, controllers, PLC, VFD, SCADA systems, and other city-maintained electrical utilities.
Technical Knowledge and Precision
Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, schematics, and technical manuals to ensure proper installation and operation, along with performing work with high accuracy.
Safety Awareness and Emergency Response
Strong understanding of safety procedures, particularly when working in elevated areas (e.g., using bucket trucks), and the ability to respond efficiently to emergency calls and complaints.
Team Collaboration and Communication
Capacity to work productively as a team member, effectively communicate in both written and verbal formats, and assist in completing varied skilled and semi-skilled tasks within the division.
Organizational Skills and Inventory Management
Skill in prioritizing projects, taking inventory, and placing orders to ensure readiness for current and future tasks and to maintain a well-stocked supply of necessary materials.
Essential Responsibilities
• Must be a participating productive member of a team.
• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on street lights, traffic lights, traffic signals, controllers, PLC, VFD and SCADA systems.
• Work with other electricians on traffic systems and other city-maintained electric utilities (plants, parks, buildings, etc.).
• Reviews electrical plans and materials list to interpret specifications and methods installation.
• Plans work procedure, using charts, technical manuals, schematics and experience.
• Verifies loads, demand facts and number of circuits to ensure that circuits are capable of operating without overload.
• Ability to troubleshoot switching devices, controls, outlets, fixtures, motors and other such equipment to identify a problem with operation.
• Checks and repairs pumps, fans, valves and motors.
• Use a computer to help obtain information, gather and analyze data efficiently. Filling out trouble reports.
• Responds to emergency calls and complaints.
• Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in division.
• Ability to understand and communicate written instructions.
• May work from bucket of extended truck boom.
• Operates snow removal equipment to maintain streets and other city properties as needed.
• Related and other duties as required.
• Able to take inventory and make and place orders based off of needs for current and upcoming projects and to replenish regular in-house supplies.
• Must report for work at required time and date and maintain a responsible attendance record.
• The ability to follow a supervisor's instructions, tolerate certain levels of stress, and attend work on a punctual, regular basis.
• The avoidance of violent behavior that threatens the safety of other employees.
Physical Demands
• Heavy Work:
Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally. (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time), and /or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
Will also be expected to be lifted to and /or climb to extended heights.
Environmental Conditions
• Outside:
No effective protection from weather. A job is considered "outside" if the worker spends approximately 75 percent or more of the time outside.
Requirements
Educational & Employment Requirements
• High School Diploma
• Must possess a valid commercial driver's license with all applicable endorsements or obtain one within 480 working hours.
• Journeyman's (Electrical) License for the City of Sandusky. (A State Journeyman's License may be accepted in lieu of the City license. If this is the case, a City license must be obtained within 1 year of hire date.)
