Overview

City of Sandusky – Public Works Administrator
Responsibilities- With support and input from the City Manager and City Commission, the Administrator is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Department of Public Works.
- The Department consists of multiple Divisions including Engineering, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Public Services. Further, Public Services Division contains units including Forestry, Water Distribution, Sewer Maintenance, Streets and Cemetery.
- Direct, evaluate, and coordinate a diverse set of divisions within the Public Works Department; establish clear goals; lead a high-performance organization; develop policies and procedures that align with city goals.
- Oversee complex infrastructure projects; manage contracts, timelines, quality, and budgets; prepare and monitor capital and operating budgets for resource allocation and fiscal responsibility.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations related to infrastructure, engineering, and public safety; uphold community standards.
- Apply for federal and state grants; coordinate and monitor grant awards with divisions, other agencies, and departments; manage awarded funds to support projects and goals efficiently.
- Make public presentations to large groups, community meetings; facilitate discussions and problem solving among staff, the public, and agencies.
- Supervise employees; handle sensitive personnel matters; evaluate and lead a high-performance organization; consult with division superintendents and monitor division operations.
- Conduct research; prepare and maintain records, reports, bidding documents, contract documents, and related materials; interpret and apply applicable codes, ordinances, regulations, and construction standards.
- Prepare and monitor departmental and divisional performance measures with goals and initiatives in the Strategic Plan; benchmark performance toward departmental and citywide priorities.
- Monitor engineering and construction contracts with respect to budget, schedule, quality, and value; prepare annual operating and capital budgets in cooperation with others.
- Act as liaison between city divisions, local industries, state and federal regulatory agencies, consulting engineers, and other stakeholders related to Public Works functions and policies.
- Attend City Commission meetings; advise the City Commission on technical and Public Works issues; represent the City Manager and city on special assignments.
- Develop and modify departmental policies and procedures; manage infrastructure projects funded by federal and state government.
- Complete related and other duties as required; self-initiate activities aligned with the City of Sandusky’s and department’s goals and objectives; follow supervisory instructions and manage stress appropriately.
- Ensure compliance with city policies and procedures and with local, state, and federal laws and regulations; supervise personnel, recommend hires/terminations/discipline; evaluate performance and develop employees.
- Coordinate activities with other city departments; direct and evaluate the effectiveness of Public Works operations; formulate plans, policies, procedures, and regulations to achieve effective performance.
- Communicate with tact and diplomacy in one-on-one, small, and large group settings; mediate and facilitate information exchange and discussion.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field (preferred).
- A minimum of five (5) years of project management experience in public or private sector, working with local, state and federal standards and regulations.
- Experience managing a large number of employees is desirable with a minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience.
- Redevelopment experience, including brownfields, urban setting serving diverse community and older infrastructure, is preferred.
- Experience in budgeting and finance is desirable.
This is a full-time position Monday-Friday. Salary range between $75,000 - $135,000. Please apply at
