Data-Focused Business Analyst; Financial Crime Compliance

Investec Sandton is looking for a highly data-driven Business Analyst to support the Financial Crime Compliance team. This role is designed for an individual with strong data analysis, interpretation, and validation capabilities with the role emphasizing data-focused analysis while still requiring traditional business analysis skills. The candidate will contribute to both project and BAU deliverables, including requirements elicitation, data mapping, profiling, modelling, testing support, and post-implementation activities.

The role also includes resolving user issues, analysing data discrepancies, and ensuring the integrity of data flowing across systems and interfaces. The individual must be able to collaborate with stakeholders, subject matter experts, technical teams, and project managers to drive high‑quality, data‑driven solutions aligned with business strategy.

• Perform advanced data analysis, profiling, validation, and reconciliation across multiple systems and data sources.
• Translate data insights into business requirements, logic rules, specifications, and process improvements.
• Conduct impact analysis on data structures, integrations, business rules, and technical processes.
• Document data dictionaries, source-to-target mappings, reference lists, decision trees, and data rules.
• Participate in the full SDLC including requirements gathering, formulation of appropriate documents, testing (functional, data, and integration), defect analysis, and post‑implementation validation.
• Support root-cause investigations for data quality issues, anomalies, and system errors.
• Work closely with development teams to ensure accurate interpretation and implementation of data‑related requirements.
• Produce dashboards, data insights, and reports to support decision‑making in Financial Crime initiatives.
• Communicate progress, risks, and findings clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

• 5+ years' experience as a Business Analyst with strong data analysis exposure (financial crime or regulatory experience advantageous).
• Advanced SQL experience (minimum 3 years) — able to write complex queries, analyze datasets, perform reconciliation, and read logs.
• Strong capability in data interpretation, statistical thinking, pattern identification, and root‑cause analysis.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure and cloud services is an advantage.
• Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
• High ownership, comfort with ambiguity, and ability to work across business and technical teams.
• Strong communication, facilitation, and documentation skills.
• Experience with data modelling, ETL/ELT concepts, or analytics tools (advantageous).
• Ability to challenge and validate assumptions using data-driven reasoning.
